[news] 23.05.2008 International Day for Biodiversity The 22nd of May the " International Day for Biodiversity" was celebrated. Biodiversity can easily be explain "the variability among living organisms from all sources". This was how the 1992 United Nations Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro defined the word "biodiversity". This includes diversity within species, between species and of ecosystems. The day that was proclaimed by the United National, to increase the understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues, because biodiversity has a multitude of anthropocentric benefits of biodiversity. Some of the areas are agriculture, science and medicine and industrial materials.  The theme of this years Day of Biodiversity was "Biodiversity & Agriculture". Some of the themes from previous years are: 2007 "Biodiversity & Climate Change" 2006 - "Protect Biodiversity in Drylands" 2005 - "Biodiversity: Life Insurance for our Changing World" 2004 - "Biodiversity: Food, Water and Health for All" We from the organization PRAXIS held an exhibition about the Internation Day of Biodiversity on the 22 of May. [news] 07.03.2008 Computer lessons with people with special needs Computer lessons with people with special needs – Our experiences!! As part of our volunteering project we participated in helping young adults with special needs. The focus of the project was to develope their computer skills whilst doing it in a playful way. To begin with we where quite worried as we had never experienced such situations in our life's and we had to find new ways of dealing with such complex issues. Therefore we contacted our hosting organization to solve this situation together. They suggested that the first couple of times would be difficult due to new situations and the different languages. As we are not the first ones in this situation their experience showed us the perspective on our task. We were suggested that we have to open our minds and hearts and look beyond. So with this in mind we started to continue our assignment in a new way and miraculously we noticed that things changed considerably. The network of communication began to grow naturally. They responded with the same open minds and with eager faces to learn. Every new CD that we gave them was a new impulse and we could feel the happiness shine through their glowing eyes. We now feel a lot more comfortable in this field. We feel like this mission shouldn’t stop on us and that’s why we try to encourage the new volunteers to approach this situation with an open mind, as they will be doubly rewarded. eli & zibi & andrius Zeepee;

Owning the best professionals in the field of visual arts, they try to sell us things that we don't really need for the money we don't have (well, you can still borrow it from your friendly neighborhood bank). With terrifying consequence they take over each aspect of our life leading to situation when even going to toilet you have to face small poster trying to sell you some crap. [news] 27.02.2008 Greece Strikes Back A couple of weeks ago ( around 10th February) as I was walking around the streets of Serres I kept hearing the mention of strikes and government social security. I didn’t really pay much attention to this, as we often hear the mention of strikes and not much ever comes of this. So as you can well imagine, it gave me a large shock when I stepped out off my door on Wednesday the 13th and found the whole town empty – well that was until around 11.30 where a massive crowd gathered in the main square of Serres and began to protest against government social security. At this point the whole town became alive with the sound of people shouting, protesting, arguing and singing. I soon learned that this strike was not just in Serres but in ALL of Greece, at that precise moment there where thousands of people marching through Athens and Thessaloniki ( more than 9,000). Strikers carried banners reading ‘hands off our pension funds’ and ‘the future belongs to the workers’. This strike affected all schools, hospitals and all public services, journalists went on strike -canceling all news bulletins and current affairs programmes for the day, dentists, lawyers, construction workers and civil servants also left their jobs, TV channels did not report any news and there where no circulation of newspapers. Transport was affected the worst by this strike, no buses, taxis, trains, metros, ferries, and all domestic and international flights at all airports where canceled due to striking air traffic controllers. I was interested to find that Greece's two main labour unions called this strike to protest against the conservative government's efforts to reform Greece's debt-ridden and fractured pension system. Unions claim the reforms will lead to lower pensions and higher retirement ages. The Social security sector's roughly 154 funds and to make cuts to early retirement programs. It comes ahead of Prime Minister Karamanlis' announcement of the draft bill and debate in Parliament scheduled on that following Friday. A lot of people would stereotype the Greeks as being lazy and so as I watched the strikers begin to make there march through the main square I couldn’t help but feel pleased for these so called “lazy” Greeks. They had managed to grind a halt to their entire country for a whole 24 hours for one single purpose – To bring justice back to their country. Elinor Wills;
[news] 27.02.2008 Support Vaggelis Botzatzis, Greek Eco-Prisoner !  A Solidarity March was organised in Thessaloniki, on Vaggelis Botzatzis' case. He is detained in Komotini juridical prison accused for radical eco direct actions. Vaggelis was arrested in his house on day after the last action under the "anti"terrorist law, since a security guard claims he recognised his car. Vaggelis doesn't accept the accusations and states he was framed up. [news] 04.02.2008 World wetlands day 2th of Ferbruary On the second of February each year many countries join together to help raise awareness about our wetland values and benefits. The date is to mark the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands on 2 February 1971, in the Iranian city of Ramsar on the shores of the Caspian Sea. Each year since 1997, government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and groups of citizens at all levels of the community have taken advantage of the opportunity to undertake actions aimed at raising public awareness of wetland values and benefits in general and the Ramsar Convention in particular.  The theme for wetland day this year is ‘Healthy Wetlands, Healthy People’. Some of the positive effects on human health of maintaining healthy wetlands - such as the provision of food, clean water, pharmaceutical products, etc. - and the negative effects of mismanaging wetlands that result in the impairment of our health and even the loss of life - such as through the effects of water-related diseases, burning peatlands, floods, and water pollution. [news] 02.10.2007 Greek Drumming  Last week we went to Nigrita, and experienced our first taste of Greek drumming, with the fabulous Nikos Touliatos. This amazing drummer taught us to drum merely on dustbins. Nikos self taught himself to play the drums at the age of 14, and has been playing ever since! This led to his collaborations with Mikis Theodorakis, Manos Loizos, Thanos Mikroutsikos, Gunter Sommer and not to mention collaborations with visual artists, dancers, actors, Greek and international directors. After a couple of hours of working up a sweat playing the drums, we where invited to play at a concert the following evening!! Naturally we accepted, and found ourselves playing in front of many new faces. The experience was fantastic and definitely one I shall never forget!! ...more Elinor Wills;
[news] 01.10.2007 Ozone Day On the 14th of September we celebrated International Day of Ozone Layer Protection. In the central square of Serres we placed three big banners with comic books about Ozzy, the fictional character created to explain in a easy and funny way, serious problems coming with everyday life ozone layer protection. The small superhero talks about using Freon free sprays, dangerous substances waiting to get out of your home fridge, and other small issues where we can make a difference and help the global environment together. Colorful and smooth drawing makes it easy to attract kids and go through with the important message. Unfortunately all pages were in English, so not many kids were trying to read it (unable to do it or just not interested enough to make an effort of translating the whole thing). The whole event lasted for about five hours (until 2 o clock), and hopefully planted a good thought in few young minds.  Zeepee;

[news] 27.08.2007 Fires in Greece On Saturday the 25th of August a national emergence was called for the fires that are sweeping across Greece, with the death toll increasing everyday. You might think that these fires are caused by nature, as consequence of soaring temperatures, but no, these fires were deliberate. There is now a 1 million Euro reward to help catch the arsonists that have caused destruction across Greece and has cost at least 60 people their lives. [news] 12.06.2007 Update on Alan Johnston Alan Johnston is a missing British Journalist. He was the only international correspondent still be living and working in the Gaza Strip and was kidnapped on this Gaza city office on the 12th of March. There has been a development in this story since the last report on this website, for World Press Freedom Day. On the 1st of June, 12 weeks after his disappearance a video has been released showing the first pictures of Alan Johnston since his abduction. The video is supposed to have been posted by the Army of Islam, which is the group that is supposed to be holding Mr. Johnston. It in the video he says that he is healthy and being treated well, but it cannot be identified where and when the video was made. The US, Russia, the UN and the EU have called for the release of Mr. Johnston, urging the Palestinian authorities to do everything they can to ensure his release. [news] 23.05.2007 ÌÁÈÇÔÉÁÄÁ 2007 The event this year took place between the 11th and 16th of May. With around 1000 students, 200 chaperone's and 400 volunteers taking part over the six days. With many sporting events, art exhibitions, cultural exhibitions and much more. It is an event that is taken part by Greek students from all over Greece and from other countries, such as England, Australia, America and even China. [news] 16.05.2007 Environmental projects displayed in Σερρες. On Saturday the 12th of May the central square of Σερρες was filled with exhibitions on environmental projects. The projects were produced by children, who varied in ages from schools all over Σερρών. There were many projects which had themes such as eco tourism, global warming, organic food products, sources of drinking water, sources of energy and recycling of electrical appliances to name but a few. The all collected their information through various different methods, which included school visits, looking through magazines and on the internet. The projects were completed by the children out of school time, which shows the enthusiasm the children have to participate in issues about the environment. All EVS volunteers attended the exhibition and interviewed the children about their projects, but most of the children only had a basic level of English, so this made the task very hard and they seemed to be more interested in us and our volunteer work than telling us about their projects. But from what we understood of the projects they seemed very impressive. Thanks to the children that attempted to speak to us in English. The schools of Serres took part in the competition, to find a new writing talent among the children.
