EVS Mid-Term Part 2
Hello man dudes and girl dudes!
As Marcus wrote we’ve been on our midterm seminar. “We” existed of yours truly, Marcus, Sophie and Emilie.

Since “Marcy” (hehehehehe, sorry dude, just had to..) already filled ya’ll in on the roadblocking thingy, I’m gonna talk more about the seminar.
I liked the midterm more than the on arrival, because the people that came was people you’d already met. And the trainer was the same. So you knew the people already felt comfortable. This made everyone more open and honest about thoughts and perspectives. We had some energizer-games, but not as many as on the on arrival. This time we got more information. It was nice to see everyone again and to know more about our rights and possibilities as volunteers.

We went to some cultural place on the Saturday, don’t really remember the name. That was really nice. We had some free time from 6 to 8, when we were suppose to eat. There was a band, a rockabilly band if I was right, that was suppose to play at 7 but didn’t start until 8.15. That was disappointing because I looked forward to see them.

Anyway, all in all it was a really good seminar. Wish that it would’ve been longer though…
But, but. Another time, right? Hehe.

Have a good time, man & girl dudes!
Keep on trucking!

EVS Mid-Term Part 1
Hello everyone! From the 22nd-25th of January 4 of the 6 Praxis volunteers participated in a Mid-Term evaluation meeting in Athens. We left Serres at 12.00am and arrived in Athens at 8:30am of the 22nd.

Throughout the day we saw familiar faces from our On-Arrival checking-in to the Hotel. In my opinion, it felt a lot less awkward with so many people this time because we had all gotten to know each other from our On-Arrival so it was much easier to talk with a lot of people. One good thing about EVS is that it's easy to get along with people because you are all in the same situation and therefore all have something in common!

At 6:30 that evening we began our seminar but because it was our first day and many people had been travelling for a long time because of the roadblocks it was a fun, relaxing night. Obviously there was a serious side to it to begin with. For example, we were explained to as to what the seminars would be about and why there were so many problems in organising the Mid-Term (We did not know for definite where it would be until about 3 days before we had to be in Athens!)

Some of the activities included traditional Greek dancing and 'crowd surfing' these were a lot of fun and after some wine most people weren't to shy about taking part in the activities! We also had to split into 2 groups and come up with a way to welcome everybody. Our group chose to form a circle while dancing to 'Eye of the Tiger', original I know, while saying "Welcome" in Greek, which is "Καλώς ορίσατε" and then giving everyone a hug in the other group. Everyone likes to be hugged right!?

This is it from me now, the others will fill you in on the rest!

World AIDS Day 2008
December 1st 2008 was World AIDS Day. HIV is a virus that attacks the body's immune system. When someone is described as living with HIV, they have the HIV virus in their body. A person develops AIDS when the immune system is so weak it can no longer fight off a range of diseases (like the flu) it could normally cope with.

It is estimated that in 2007, 33 million people are living with HIV worldwide with 2 million total deaths. Currently there is no cure or vaccine against AIDS but with donations you will help bring about change. Visit www.worldaidsday.org or watch our video below for more facts and figures!

I would like to inform you about the release of the updated guidebook "YouthXchange", this version with the theme "Responsible Consumption", produced by UNEP (www.unep.org) and UNESCO (www.unesco.org). The guide's target group, as can be told by the title, is young people. In the description for why it is made it's written that young people today establish their identities through what they buy. They seek social status with buying the newest and “coolest” products on the market.

This I can agree with to a big extent. I think many people feel the pressure of having to dress according to the fashion or having things with a popular and often expensive brand. Consumption of these things are increasing and that is a big problem, not only for the wallet but also for human rights and the environment. Problems such as ozone depletion, climate change and hazardous wastes is a result. That's why they've made this guide; a way for more environmentally friendly way to consume and to still look cool! This book is adopted in 19 different countries and available in different languages. For more information visit www.youthXchange.net

Environment actions - NOW!
Back home in Sweden in my town, I was a member of a Youth council in Swedish called “Ungdomsfullmäktige”. It is a council within the municipality and we are/were working like the “real” municipality council but in questions more in the area of young people’s interests. In this council we have different committees/groups that are specified in certain topics for example; culture, media, social- and environment questions, school. I was a part of the social- and environment committee. My focus was especially on the environment since it is a subject lying close to the heart of my interests. We among other arranged a night in a “youth house” we’ve got in our city where we promoted all kinds of things for a better environmentally future. Sometimes working with this got me really frustrated because it felt like so many people in Sweden didn’t care. I mean, how hard is it to recycle for example?! Anyway, I had no idea how I later would feel…

Yes, the mentality about these things in Greece are terrible comparing to Sweden! Everyone throws whatever they want right out on the streets, they take their cars everywhere, smoke like i-don’t-know-what, and recycling is practically an unknown word. It is really sad to see.

I was walking up to the Acropolis of the city yesterday, a nice way up through the small “forest”. Or at least it would have been without all the beer cans, cigarettes, plastics, rubbish, even condoms lying on the ground everywhere! Where has the respect for the nature gone, I wonder. It is impossible for me to understand how you can throw a metal can just out in the nature like that. Might there aren’t enough rubbish bins but most likely it is a lack of knowledge. I feel like I want to do something for this. I must do it before I leave!

Anyone who feels the same, please contact me: cecilia.halldin@hotmail.com and we’ll do some changing around here!

Anti Racism
Some weeks ago a group of young people came to the radio station to create a spot. It turned out they are members of a group here in Serres that works against racism, Youth Voices Against Racism. At the moment they are working on this subject by for example having co-operation with the local football team of Serres, Panserraikos. It is a good way for young people to take a distance from racism as football is a very popular thing, especially among young people. And if they see their idols from the football team speaking against racism they will hopefully do it as well. Soon two of the girls will go to Bologna in Italy to participate in a youth exchange for this topic.

They have got a blog and the address to this one is:

article about PRAXIS and volunteers in Swedish newspapers!
The 23rd of July in three local newspapers in the county of Värmland, Sweden, you could find one article in each, interesting for PRAXIS. It was written about young people from Kristinehamn coming here to our organization, to “work” as volunteers. All of the three articles is speaking approximately of the same things; what opportunities a working time abroad gives you, their expectations and a bit about PRAXIS as an organization and what the work is about.
The articles are in Swedish it is a bit problematic for you out there to understand, so since I am from Sweden, I have chosen to translate one of them. This article is from the newspaper called “Nya Kristinehamnsposten” and is the local paper from the town from which the mentioned young persons are.

International Youth Day
On the 12 of August we have the International Youth Day. This day was funded for young people all over the world, to make them feel more and more that they are the future. We shall encourage our youngsters out there to make them do whatever they want (almost)! It is really important, without them/us there won't be a tomorrow. So come on all you out there, fulfill your dreams!

We have during 3 weeks now had 3 other volunteers. Eduardo Lopes from Portugal, Peter Sundqvist and Tobias Wallin, both from Sweden. Even though it is some weeks left until the International Youth Day, this day was in focus in the work they did here. Together with me Cecilia, Eduardo and Tobias created a short spot about this day that is played on the local radio station RODONFM. We made it in three languages, Swedish, English and Spanish, all saying the same thing. Peter, the other Swedish guy made a video about our life here during the two weeks, containing some work, and a lot of fun! The links for both the made spots and the video will soon be available here!

So stay tune!

International Day for Biodiversity
The 22nd of May the " International Day for Biodiversity" was celebrated. Biodiversity can easily be explain "the variability among living organisms from all sources". This was how the 1992 United Nations Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro defined the word "biodiversity". This includes diversity within species, between species and of ecosystems. The day that was proclaimed by the United National, to increase the understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues, because biodiversity has a multitude of anthropocentric benefits of biodiversity. Some of the areas are agriculture, science and medicine and industrial materials.

The theme of this years Day of Biodiversity was "Biodiversity & Agriculture". Some of the themes from previous years are:

2007 "Biodiversity & Climate Change"

2006 - "Protect Biodiversity in Drylands"

2005 - "Biodiversity: Life Insurance for our Changing World"

2004 - "Biodiversity: Food, Water and Health for All"

We from the organization PRAXIS held an exhibition about the Internation Day of Biodiversity on the 22 of May. The exhibition took place in the central square here in Serres, Greece.

Computer lessons with people with special needs

Computer lessons with people with special needs – Our experiences!!

As part of our volunteering project we participated in helping young adults with special needs. The focus of the project was to develope their computer skills whilst doing it in a playful way. To begin with we where quite worried as we had never experienced such situations in our life's and we had to find new ways of dealing with such complex issues. Therefore we contacted our hosting organization to solve this situation together. They suggested that the first couple of times would be difficult due to new situations and the different languages. As we are not the first ones in this situation their experience showed us the perspective on our task. We were suggested that we have to open our minds and hearts and look beyond. So with this in mind we started to continue our assignment in a new way and miraculously we noticed that things changed considerably. The network of communication began to grow naturally. They responded with the same open minds and with eager faces to learn. Every new CD that we gave them was a new impulse and we could feel the happiness shine through their glowing eyes. We now feel a lot more comfortable in this field. We feel like this mission shouldn’t stop on us and that’s why we try to encourage the new volunteers to approach this situation with an open mind, as they will be doubly rewarded.

Greece Strikes Back
A couple of weeks ago ( around 10th February) as I was walking around the streets of Serres I kept hearing the mention of strikes and government social security. I didn’t really pay much attention to this, as we often hear the mention of strikes and not much ever comes of this. So as you can well imagine, it gave me a large shock when I stepped out off my door on Wednesday the 13th and found the whole town empty – well that was until around 11.30 where a massive crowd gathered in the main square of Serres and began to protest against government social security. At this point the whole town became alive with the sound of people shouting, protesting, arguing and singing. I soon learned that this strike was not just in Serres but in ALL of Greece, at that precise moment there where thousands of people marching through Athens and Thessaloniki ( more than 9,000). Strikers carried banners reading ‘hands off our pension funds’ and ‘the future belongs to the workers’. This strike affected all schools, hospitals and all public services, journalists went on strike -canceling all news bulletins and current affairs programmes for the day, dentists, lawyers, construction workers and civil servants also left their jobs, TV channels did not report any news and there where no circulation of newspapers. Transport was affected the worst by this strike, no buses, taxis, trains, metros, ferries, and all domestic and international flights at all airports where canceled due to striking air traffic controllers.

I was interested to find that Greece's two main labour unions called this strike to protest against the conservative government's efforts to reform Greece's debt-ridden and fractured pension system. Unions claim the reforms will lead to lower pensions and higher retirement ages. The Social security sector's roughly 154 funds and to make cuts to early retirement programs. It comes ahead of Prime Minister Karamanlis' announcement of the draft bill and debate in Parliament scheduled on that following Friday.

A lot of people would stereotype the Greeks as being lazy and so as I watched the strikers begin to make there march through the main square I couldn’t help but feel pleased for these so called “lazy” Greeks. They had managed to grind a halt to their entire country for a whole 24 hours for one single purpose – To bring justice back to their country.

World wetlands day 2th of Ferbruary
On the second of February each year many countries join together to help raise awareness about our wetland values and benefits. The date is to mark the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands on 2 February 1971, in the Iranian city of Ramsar on the shores of the Caspian Sea. Each year since 1997, government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and groups of citizens at all levels of the community have taken advantage of the opportunity to undertake actions aimed at raising public awareness of wetland values and benefits in general and the Ramsar Convention in particular.

The theme for wetland day this year is ‘Healthy Wetlands, Healthy People’. Some of the positive effects on human health of maintaining healthy wetlands - such as the provision of food, clean water, pharmaceutical products, etc. - and the negative effects of mismanaging wetlands that result in the impairment of our health and even the loss of life - such as through the effects of water-related diseases, burning peatlands, floods, and water pollution.

So what is a wetland ?? ….
Well a wetland is special areas where water and land come together; where plants can have wet feet while still enjoying a breeze. Wetlands are a gathering place for both upland and aquatic wildlife, providing the most productive habitat possible. Benefits include :

Greek Drumming

Last week we went to Nigrita, and experienced our first taste of Greek drumming, with the fabulous Nikos Touliatos. This amazing drummer taught us to drum merely on dustbins. Nikos self taught himself to play the drums at the age of 14, and has been playing ever since! This led to his collaborations with Mikis Theodorakis, Manos Loizos, Thanos Mikroutsikos, Gunter Sommer and not to mention collaborations with visual artists, dancers, actors, Greek and international directors. After a couple of hours of working up a sweat playing the drums, we where invited to play at a concert the following evening!! Naturally we accepted, and found ourselves playing in front of many new faces. The experience was fantastic and definitely one I shall never forget!!

Ozone Day
On the 14th of September we celebrated International Day of Ozone Layer Protection. In the central square of Serres we placed three big banners with comic books about Ozzy, the fictional character created to explain in a easy and funny way, serious problems coming with everyday life ozone layer protection. The small superhero talks about using Freon free sprays, dangerous substances waiting to get out of your home fridge, and other small issues where we can make a difference and help the global environment together.
Colorful and smooth drawing makes it easy to attract kids and go through with the important message. Unfortunately all pages were in English, so not many kids were trying to read it (unable to do it or just not interested enough to make an effort of translating the whole thing). The whole event lasted for about five hours (until 2 o clock), and hopefully planted a good thought in few young minds.

Fires in Greece
On Saturday the 25th of August a national emergence was called for the fires that are sweeping across Greece, with the death toll increasing everyday. You might think that these fires are caused by nature, as consequence of soaring temperatures, but no, these fires were deliberate. There is now a 1 million Euro reward to help catch the arsonists that have caused destruction across Greece and has cost at least 60 people their lives. The reward is being offered by the Greek government for anyone who provides information, which leads to the arrest of the arsonists, "The reward is set between 100,000 and 1m euros for every [act] of arson, depending on whether death or serious injury occurred and the size of the damage."

International Youth Day: 12th August 2007
Be seen, Be heard: Youth participation for development

The goal of World Youth Day is to gather together the young people from all over the globe as a reminder of the strength and integrity of our youth. To bring our world youth together as one and to place our trust in them that they will do the right thing in the future to come. On a human level in this time of international problems and strife that we can all come together and unite to form a strong connection and to help bring hope and alleviate fears is a special thing. It is a good initiative to improve the participation of youth in global, national and local affairs and decision making

A European Community: How unified are we? How much do you feel like a European citizen?
Many achievements of the EU are already clear. It has been fifty years without war between any of the countries that make up the EU, which is unprecedented in history. As citizens of Europe we have more freedom to move around, to study, work and travel, sharing the health benefits and the social benefits of everywhere. This helps with cross-cultural understanding, personal development and the realisation of the EU's full economic potential. The EU has also created great prosperity, with Europe having some of the highest living standards. The EU has also created a single market, which is the world's largest free trade area, which has created jobs and growth of competitively priced good and services. But what does this really mean for the citizens of Europe? This article is going to focus on the impact that EU programmes has had on young people and whether young people of today feel like European citizens.

Racism
"It demands great spiritual resilience not to hate the hater whose foot is on your neck, and an even greater miracle of perception and charity not to teach your child to hate." James arthur Baldwin (Author)

Prejudice of any kind is often based on ignorance and fear of anything unfamiliar, unfortunately racism can exist in all races and cultures. Our views and beliefs develop as we mature, if a young person is brought up within a racist family or is in a racist social group then they will think that its acceptable behavior. Racism is an extremely sensitive subject for some as issues such as free speech are brought into play, some people say that its just words. Others try to point out that these words can lead to situations spiraling out of control such as the extermination of the Jews in World War II.

In today's world people are making decisions everyday to leave their homes, communities and countries. The reason some do this is because they are afraid, afraid for they're lives and the lives of their children and loved ones. Economic and social situation can also be a reason for people to relocate themselves. These people have a right that is common between them as refugees, asylum seekers, migrants and internally displaced persons. They have the right to non discrimination. What you can do!
Of the over one million species of plants and animals on this planet, only a few such as crops, timber, and edible fish have market values. Most of the remaining species aid humans in less direct ways: by creating oxygen, decomposing organic matter, filtering air and water, and controlling pests. These natural processes can be seen as "services" provided by our ecosystems. So its important that we help preserve and protect this.

These are some easy but crucial thoughts on what to do to help save our environment
