[news] 05.08.2008 article about PRAXIS and volunteers in Swedish newspapers! The 23rd of July in three local newspapers in the county of Värmland, Sweden, you could find one article in each, interesting for PRAXIS. It was written about young people from Kristinehamn coming here to our organization, to “work” as volunteers. All of the three articles is speaking approximately of the same things; what opportunities a working time abroad gives you, their expectations and a bit about PRAXIS as an organization and what the work is about. The articles are in Swedish it is a bit problematic for you out there to understand, so since I am from Sweden, I have chosen to translate one of them. This article is from the newspaper called “Nya Kristinehamnsposten” and is the local paper from the town from which the mentioned young persons are. Click more to read the full translated article! VOLUNTARY GREECE TRAVELLERS The municipality of Kristinehamn has during many years had a co-operation with the Greek organization PRAXIS within a EU-project. Through the project young people from Kristinehamn has had the opportunity to go to Greece as volunteers. This autumn four youths will travel down for 6 months working, but first up is Caroline Hansen who in August will go there for a three weeks long staying. Caroline Hansen, who has got Down syndrome, made headlines of many newspapers when she a couple of years ago went to England for a youth exchange. An exchange that made her last year go down go Brussels to receive a price at the European Youth Award for the best Swedish youth project of 2006. - After this I got to write autographs, says Caroline. On the 19th of August it is time for her to take on Europe again. This time the trip is headed to Serres in Greece, a town about an hour from Thessaloniki. Carolines mother Titti tells that Caroline at first would have gone to Serres in May, but it was hard to find someone who could go down with her non-paid. When the trip now finally will take off Linn Ridde will follow as to be assistant of Caroline’s. In Greece Caroline is going to participate as a volunteer in an organization that is equal to the activities at “Wahlunrden” in Kristinehamn. She is also going to do work the other, present volunteers are doing. - It is much work with computers. Websites and an Internet newspaper, but also creating of brochures and making radio, says Jonas Åberg who has been in Serres and now is working as mentor for future volunteers. Big opportunity The organization PRAXIS, that the volunteers in Greece are working together with, are mainly focused on human rights and awareness of the environment. Jonas tells that you are very active in different happenings like the World Water Day etc. The volunteers who are there for the long term project also get the chance to host an own radio show, something that might be pretty noticed. - I think I was in ten newspaper articles during my time in Serres, says Jonas. During the autumn four people from Kristinehamn will go for the long-term project, for six months. Two of them are already in Greece, but Sophie Söderholm and Emelie Eriksson are going in November. Both of them are seeing this as a big opportunity to experience something new and that it is a chance that you cannot miss. Any nervousness is not present for them. - I think the hardest thing is that I’m going to miss my friends back home, says Emelie. Åsa Askerskär who works as a youth coordinator at the municipality, doesn’t think that there will be a problem: - It will be ok through e-mail and MSN. To go abroad isn’t only focused on the volunteers learning much about the country they come to, they also learn much about Sweden and Swedish culture. Åsa says that there are many volunteers that has gotten a much more clear insight and understanding of how everything works in Sweden after their time in another country. The town Serres is placed in North of Greece, is not a tourist place and it is a bit far from the sea. The amount of inhabitants is similar to Karlstad (a city close to Kristinehamn), but is only a third of the size. - It is the real Greece you get to experience when you are there, says Jonas. If you are one of the lucky ones who can read Swedish, here are the links for the two other articles that I did not translate. The third one, that I did translate, was unfortunately not available to read online. http://www.vf.se/Nyheter/Kristinehamn/2008/Juli/Vecka-30/Volontarer-gor-radio-i-Grekland.aspx http://www.nwt.se/articlePages/200807/22/20080722215011_903/20080722215011_903.dbp.asp Cizi; 0 comments © 2004-2008 rCMS by rolandinsh.lv |
