[news] 02.07.2007 Eleftheria 2007 From the 20th to the 28th of June the festival Eleftheria was held
in Serres. The festival consisted of three, three day events.
Activities included puppet shows, dancing, fairground rides, painting,
face painting, exhibitions and much more. Praxis EVS volunteers took
part, helping with UNESO's exhibition stand, which included information
about World Environment Day and the International Polar year. We were
also selling olive trees, helping the number of trees being planted for
the billion tree campaign.

[news] 18.06.2007 June 17th World Day to Combat Desertification Yesterday was World Day to Combat Desertification, which is
celebrated on the 17th of June every year. The day marks the
anniversary of the adoption of the United Nations Convention to Combat
Desertification. It highlights the need to stop the process of
desertification and it also tries to stress the seriousness of the dry
lands issue on the international environmental agenda. This years theme
was "Desertification and Climate Change: One Global Challenge", which
is to highlight the links between climate change and desertification.

Prejudice
of any kind is often based on ignorance and fear of anything
unfamiliar, unfortunately racism can exist in all races and cultures.
Our views and beliefs develop as we mature, if a young person is
brought up within a racist family or is in a racist social group then
they will think that its acceptable behavior. Racism is an extremely
sensitive subject for some as issues such as free speech are brought
into play, some people say that its just words. Others try to point out
that these words can lead to situations spiraling out of control such
as the extermination of the Jews in World War II.
[news] 12.06.2007 Update on Alan Johnston Alan Johnston is a missing British Journalist. He was the only
international correspondent still be living and working in the Gaza
Strip and was kidnapped on this Gaza city office on the 12th of March.
There
has been a development in this story since the last report on this
website, for World Press Freedom Day. On the 1st of June, 12 weeks
after his disappearance a video has been released showing the first
pictures of Alan Johnston since his abduction. The video is supposed to
have been posted by the Army of Islam, which is the group that is
supposed to be holding Mr. Johnston. It in the video he says that he is
healthy and being treated well, but it cannot be identified where and
when the video was made. The US, Russia, the UN and the EU have called
for the release of Mr. Johnston, urging the Palestinian authorities to
do everything they can to ensure his release.

their homes, communities and countries. The reason some do this is
because they are afraid, afraid for they're lives and the lives of
their children and loved ones. Economic and social situation can also
be a reason for people to relocate themselves. These people have a
right that is common between them as refugees, asylum seekers, migrants
and internally displaced persons. They have the right to non

[news] 07.06.2007 Tuesday 5th of June World Environment Day This Tuesday was World Environment Day. The day was celebrated in
Serres, by the planting of olive trees, which in Greek culture
symbolises peace and goodwill. The ceremony took place in one of the
three abandoned military camps in Serres and was attended by some
important figures from the municipality, education, UNESCO and by a
representative of the army. The camp is usually closed to the public
but was opened especially for World Environment Day. It has been
proposed that the camp is to be redeveloped, as it is a large area that
has been unused since the 1970's. The trees will go towards the goal of
a billion tress planted in 2007, by the Billion Tree Campaign. The
number of pledged trees has exceeded its goal, with the number now at
1,017,346,104 and the number of planted trees has reached 17,212,965.

This
year to coincide with this year's theme of Melting Ice: A Hot Topic?
The Hellenic Tennis Federation (HTF) is organizing a junior tennis
tournament called Green Tennis Tournaments Melting Ice: A Hot Topic?
The tournaments will be held on the 2nd and 3rd of June and will take
place in all the tennis clubs in Greece. There will be various
categories based on ages and every category will have an "Environment
2007" winner.

[news] 01.06.2007 What is the International Polar Year? The International Polar Year (IPY) extends over two years; it
started in March 2007 and will finish in March 2009. It is going to be
the largest ever international research programme in the Polar Regions.
It's main focus in the climate change and the interactions of climate,
oceans, ice, land, ecosystems and human society in the Arctic and
Antarctic.

As a society we are aware that
there have been changes in the climate. We are experiencing milder
winters and warmer summers. These are changes that an average citizen
can experience, but what is really going on?
Other visible
impacts of climate change include the shrinking Arctic ice cap, rising
sea levels, receding glaciers worldwide, thawing permafrost, earlier
break-up of river and like ice, increasing intensity and duration of
tropical storms, lengthening of mid to high latitude growing seasons
and shifts in plant and animal ranges and behaviour.
It is all
very well to list the changes in climate, but listing the affects of
climate change isn't likely to provoke any feelings, as humans we need
to know how these changes affect the environment around us and how it
affects us.

biodiversity day 22nd of May. And for you who does not know what
biodiversity is, it can simply be explained by one quote: �the

With around 1000 students, 200 chaperone's and 400 volunteers taking
part over the six days. With many sporting events, art exhibitions,
cultural exhibitions and much more.
It is an event that is
taken part by Greek students from all over Greece and from other
countries, such as England, Australia, America and even China. The
children take part in a number of different sporting events including
baseball, volleyball, tennis, football, handball, wrestling, shooting
and archery to name but a few.

complement the designation of 2007 as the International Polar Year and
also coincides with UNEP'S World Environment Day theme of Climate
Change.

website "Biological diversity includes all plants, animals,
microorganisms, the ecosystems of which they are part, and the
diversity within species, between species, and of ecosystems."
[news] 16.05.2007 Environmental projects displayed in ??????. On Saturday the 12th of May the central square of ?????? was filled
with exhibitions on environmental projects. The projects were produced
by children, who varied in ages from schools all over ??????. There
were many projects which had themes such as eco tourism, global
warming, organic food products, sources of drinking water, sources of
energy and recycling of electrical appliances to name but a few. The
all collected their information through various different methods,
which included school visits, looking through magazines and on the
internet. The projects were completed by the children out of school
time, which shows the enthusiasm the children have to participate in
issues about the environment. All EVS volunteers attended the
exhibition and interviewed the children about their projects, but most
of the children only had a basic level of English, so this made the
task very hard and they seemed to be more interested in us and our
volunteer work than telling us about their projects. But from what we
understood of the projects they seemed very impressive.
Thanks to the children that attempted to speak to us in English.

[news] 09.05.2007 Climate Change: Migratory birds, the facts. Due to global warming the earths temperature is increasing and is
on average one degree higher on land and across the oceans than a
century ago. These changes in temperature have affected many parts of
the earth, the arctic, coastal areas, oceans and forests.
The
changes in climate change not only affect us humans but also all other
living creatures on earth, including birds. Migratory birds plan their
year by the changes in weather, but the weather patterns are changing,
causing confusion amongst the birds, which in effect is reducing their
chances of survival.

and spring. Huge flocks of storks, cranes, geese and a lot of other
migrating birds flying over our sky. Why they do this? To escape the

attention that the birds have stopped flying away to warmer climates.
But why? Why stop this long lasted tradition of the birds? Have they

[news] 08.05.2007 New Writers Competition Serres Monday the 7th of May saw the New Writers Competition of Serres.
The schools of Serres took part in the competition, to find a new
writing talent among the children. The children read their stories on
stage, often acting them out or using a song to illustrate the story.

[news] 04.05.2007 What are migratory birds and why do they need to be protected? Climate changes are affecting migratory bids, but what exactly is a migratory bird and why do they need to be protected?
Migration
is a natural process for birds; they fly thousands of miles in order to
find the best conditions, for feeding, breeding and raising their
young. Most notably when a country gets colder, the birds fly to warmer
climates, as it makes breeding easier. But there are many different
migration patterns. According to the WMBD website "Most birds migrate
from northern breeding areas in the summer, to southern wintering
grounds. However, some birds breed in the far south of Africa, and
migrate to northern wintering grounds, or horizontally, to enjoy the
milder coastal climates in winter. Other birds migrate in terms of
altitude, moving higher up a mountain in summer, and wintering on the
lowlands."

beauty of migrating birds and for promoting their conservation

this year's event is to make people aware of how birds are being
affected by climate change.

[news] 02.05.2007 World Press Freedom Day. How much freedom do we really have? We might think that everyone is entitled to free speech, but it's
not that simple. Some journalists and other media professionals who try
to exercise their freedom of speech, have their publications shut down,
they are silenced, attacked and even murdered. You might believe that
this is something that happened many years ago and doesn't exist today,
but you would be wrong.
According to the Reporters Without
Borders Press Freedom Barometer, it is countries that are involved in
violent conflicts that are the most dangerous places for media
professions. Countries such as Iraq, Sri Lanka, Colombia and
Afghanistan. But it is shocking to see that there have also been
reported deaths in countries that are not war zones, such as Mexico,
Russia, Philippines and China. In total 81 journalists and 32 media
assistants were killed last year. This shows that journalists are under
threat where ever they are.
These figures are shocking, with
2006 being the deadliest year on record. But what is even more
disturbing is that fact that most of these crimes go unpunished.
According to the Committee to Protect Journalists in the last 15 years
about 85% of all journalists' murderers faced neither investigation nor
prosecution for their crimes.
It is shocking to find out that
up to today, 2/5/07 according to the Press Freedom Barometer 24
journalists have been killed, 5 media assistants killed, 125
journalists imprisoned, 4 media assistants imprisoned and 65
cyberdissidents imprisoned.
Anna
Politkovskaya was murdered in Moscow on the 7th of October 2006 and was
the 76th journalist to be killed that year. She is also being awarded
the 2007 UNESCO/Guillermo World Cano Press Freedom Prize and is the
only one to be awarded the prize after death.
This
is Alan Johnston who is the BBC's Palestinian Territories correspondant
who has been held hostage in the Gaza Strip since the 12th of March
2007.

[news] 30.04.2007 World Press Freedom Day 3rd of May 2007 World Press Freedom Day is a day that has been designated by the
United Nations to raise the awareness of the importance of freedom of
the press and to remind governments of their duty to uphold the right
to freedom of expression under Article 19 of the Universal Declaration
of Human Rights.
It was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly
in 1993 and is celebrated on the 3rd of May every year, which is the
anniversary of the Declaration of Windhoek, a statement of free press
principles which was put together by African newspaper journalists in
1991.

celebrations. Although you might have an idea about volunteering, do
you really know what it involves?
Volunteering is about giving up your time to do something useful and not get paid for it (apart from expenses).
[news] 19.04.2007 National and Global Youth Service Day This day is celebrated on the 20th-22nd of April. It is an event
that was started in America, where they have a strong tradition for
volunteering. Youth Service America was started in 1986, with a mission
to encourage youths to participate in volunteering and to support them,
with the goal for lifelong volunteering. Global Service day first
started in 2000, with the support of Youth Service America.
So why should youths volunteer?
According
to the Youth Service America website there are many good reasons why
youths should participate in volunteering. It is noted that students
who volunteer are more likely to do well in school, graduate, vote, and
volunteer the rest of the lives. They are less likely to abuse drugs
and alcohol and engage in other destructive behaviour. Also youth
volunteer service, contributing more than 2.4 billion hour each year is
worth more than 34.3 billion dollars to the US economy.

Youths will design and lead service learning projects in areas ranging

organizations are already doing, an opportunity to launch a new
program, and to involve a new generation of volunteers to help as part

[news] 12.04.2007 Climate change: Who will it affect most? A recent report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change
(IPCC) highlights the ever growing unfair divide of global warming.
Global warming is going to affect regions differently. While it is the
riches countries, who have contributed the most so far to global
warming; it is the poorer countries that are going to be hit hardest.
This is not to say that richer countries aren't going to be hit by the
effects of global warming, but they have the resources to combat most
of the consequences, so they will be shielded from most of the effects.
But poorer countries do not have the resources to tackle the problems
of global warming.
So should it really be a balance between
trying to prevent the effects of global warming, managing the effects
of global warming and helping poorer ones fight the consequences of
global warming?

every year on one weekend in April (this year it is held on the 20-22nd
of April), events are held all around the world. It is organised by the

the year-round contributions that young people make to their
communities and their work through voluntary service.

Earth Day 2007 will be targeting 500 million people to switch to more energy efficient lighting.

Day Network (EDN) has called on lighting manufacturers and policy
makers to ban the inefficient incandescent light bulb by 2016. EDN is
taking action now as they do not want to wait for legislation to be
passed for the mandatory phasing out of light bulbs.

When most of us think
about water shortage, if we think about it at all, we think about a
local problem just something that happens for a short part of the year
when the weathers particularly good. We don't regard these as problems
more an inconvenience knowing that it will be handled and resolved by
conservation, investment or other management strategies.

It
is estimated by UNESCO that between 6,000 and 7,000 languages are
spoken in the world today and many more have become extinct. It is
estimated that 50% of these languages are at risk of becoming extinct.

on the life on Anne Frank, which was held in ?????, Serres. The
exhibition focused on the biography of Anne Frank, linking her life
story with the events of the Holocaust and with messages on human
rights.
